These sessions are intended to compliment the “Introduction to Duplicate Bridge” course. The group aims to help members to improve their Bridge play and bidding, with an emphasis on play.

The course has been designed as a one year course beginning after Easter each year.  The Summer term will concentrate on playing no trump hands, the Autumn term will concentrate on playing suit contracts and the final term will be consolidating the learning and practising in a supportive environment.

Typically at each meeting there will be a brief discussion of an aspect of play followed by hands to practise the current topic or a duplicate session.  (Members will be shown how to use bidding boxes and fill in travellers as necessary.)  Bidding according to the system taught by Fleet u3a will be encouraged.  Players will be allowed to talk and use their notes, over time they will be supported to speed up their play.  The rules and etiquette of the EBU will be encouraged.  It is envisaged that members would be in the group for no more than two years, but the basic course will be the same every year.

There will be ‘help sheets’ and quizzes available which will be emailed to members before the meeting.  Members who do not have access to email are expected to have a friend who is able to pass course material on.  Results (if duplicate was played) will be emailed along with any comments about interesting hands or those which illustrate a particular aspect of bidding if appropriate together with the sheets for the next session.

Entry Requirements for Beginners Bridge Play

The group is open to anyone who has attended at least two terms of the u3a Introductory Bridge group.  The normal progression will be to join the group at Easter having started the Introductory course the previous September.  Other people will be able to join at the discretion of the group leaders.  All members must bid and play according to the system taught by Fleet u3a.  Members do not need to have partners.  There will be a waiting list if there are too many people wanting to join.
